The brief

An extensive refurbishment and extension of a private villa, adding a substantial basement, landscaped grounds, an outdoor swimming pool and a tennis court.

The house sits in a conservation area, so external plant had to be kept to a minimum without compromising comfort, efficiency or the pool.

Key moves

  1. One renewable heat source for the whole estate

Ground source heat pumps provide space heating, domestic hot water and pool heating from a single borehole array.

  2. Cooling that rejects heat to the ground

The cooling system is tied into the same boreholes, using the ground rather than outdoor condensers to reject heat, which raises efficiency.

  3. No significant plant in the garden

With heat going to and from the ground, the landscape and the house in its conservation setting are left uncluttered.
